Preparing Your Poome-sae or Form for Competition
Tournaments help increase self-confidence and improve technique. As students prepare for tournament competition, they will find new levels of intensity in their workouts. although tournaments are a little scary at first, they really play an important role in a student's development. By changing their surroundings, students must make the techniques an automatic reflex. If you typically always train in the same area you will start to use walls to remember a segment of your form. A student's brain will quickly find focal points to help remember direction and movements.
Here are three quick tips to help you at your next tournament competition:
1. Practice your form facing different directions. This will keep your mind sharp and increase your long-term form memory.
2. Practice on different surfaces. Tournaments are held on everything from carpet to wood and even special training mats. Practice on many different surfaces and watch your technique improve immediately.
3. When you're nervous, slow down. When we are nervous we tend to speed up so that we won't forget anything. Breathe slowly and develop longer, stronger techniques. |
